A little listening walk
- Go outside with a grown-up. Stand still and listen for one minute.
- Can you hear a bird? The wind? Footsteps? Tell your grown-up what you hear.
- Find a fallen leaf. Describe it: big or small, green or brown. Leave living plants growing.
- At home, draw three things you noticed and label them together.

Your first English story time
- Before reading: look at the characters together. Ask what your child notices.
- Read a little at a time. Use gestures and a warm voice. Let your child listen without having to answer.
- Pause at “Sniff, sniff, sniff.” Invite your child to join in, make the sound or do the action.
- Choose two or three words to repeat during the day. Keep it playful; there is no test.
- Read the same story again another day. Familiar words give children chances to join in.
